Abstract
Abstract This research addresses the controversy and implications of legislations that prohibit the use of the hijab in various European countries, focusing on three main approaches: fashion, politics, and feminism. Through the analysis of specific cases in Europe, it examines the political and religious positions of Muslim women affected by these prohibitions, aiming to better understand gender inequality and the autonomy of these women. A qualitative methodology with a Netnographic approach is used to track and analyze discussions on social media, forums, and other digital platforms. Among the key findings, it is highlighted that the prohibition of the hijab significantly affects the autonomy and religious freedom of Muslim women, perpetuating gender inequality. Muslim women have shown notable resistance through social movements organized on social media, using hashtags like #HandsOffMyHijab to mobilize support and raise awareness about their rights. The importance of social media as a crucial tool for mobilization and awareness is also emphasized, facilitating the creation of a global movement in defense of the right to wear the hijab. The tensions between government policies and individual rights are evident, and the hijab prohibition is seen both as a tool of state oppression and as a response to perceived threats to secularism and security.
